I was privileged enough to crack an invitation to the Momentum golf day hosted at Glendower Golf Club, and what a day it was…
Besides at the “fluff” around the golf day, the course was the best I have played in a long time. Now bearing in mind, Gauteng is in a drought with water restrictions but what the course superintendent managed to do with the course is nothing short of impressive.
I must be honest, on the fairways I did notice it is not completely green but this is only due to the dry conditions we are experiencing these days and 90% green fairways at this stage of the game is damn good in my books.
As for the rest of the course, the greens are also unbelievable, silky smooth and a very good playable pace (comfortable for me). I am saying this as I am not a particular fan of greens that run faster than 10 on the stimp… as my stroke gets a little tweaky J when it gets too fast.
Bunkers looked great, smooth, I didn’t find any bunkers myself for the day but I did manage to look and judge watching my playing partners coming out of a few.
Some really beautiful photos were taken with the lush green willow trees and perfectly mown fairways in the back drop, to remind me of the beauty and good times just in case, one day I have to go back and remind myself why I play this game.
Unfortunately with the good come a little bit of criticism and I hope this will be taken constructively. From the club’s side I didn’t find a friendly smile taking my money when paying in the golf shop, in fact the gentlemen behind the counter didn’t even make eye contact… then the halfway was also a little disappointing as they couldn’t serve what they had on the menu… big no-no in my book, if you advertise something then you should have it in stoke yes…? Fortunately the best was yet to come!
The product was absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to see how much better they are going to make it for the 2017 SA Open when Rory McIlroy comes to our OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP ( thanks Ernie for arranging!)
To make it a really amazing experience they just need to take people’s money with a smile and eye contact, also don’t advertise something on the menu if you do not have it in stock.
With this in mind, I would recommend Glendower Golf Club to anyone, even if it costs a little bit more, you have to experience the golf course at least once.
